In the state of Uttarakhand, the temple of Dunagiri Mata is established ahead of Dwarahat area of Almora district. There are many mythological and proven Shaktipeeths and one of them is Dronagiri Vaishnavi Shaktipeeth. After Vaishno Devi, “Dunagiri” is the second Vaishno Shaktipeeth in Kumaon, Uttarakhand.
It is believed about the temple that in Treta Yuga when Lakshmana got power through Meghnath then Hanuman ji went to Dronachal to fetch Sanjeevani booti from the mountain so when he was lifting the whole mountain from that place, a small piece of mountain fell from his hand and then after that the name of this place was named Dunagiri.
A small name Ganeshadhar is already popular by the name of Lord Ganesha is located on this mountain. It is told that during the Lanka war, Lakshmana was treated from the mountain of Dronachal and the context of the war of Kalnemi and Hanuman tells its Tretayugi history.
The eternal flame (Akhand Jyoti) is always burning in the Dunagiri temple. About 500 steps have to be climbed to reach this grand temple.
The temple is situated amidst different species of trees including bamboo, deodar and surai. From where devotees can have a grand view of the Himalayan mountains from the temple and at the same time, during Navratri, devotees come to the temple to offer prayers.
When the Praise are fulfilled the devotees donate gold and silver chhatra, bells and conch shells to the temple. At the same time, thousand bells in the temple are a symbol of faith and belief. The naturally created Pindiya is worshiped as Mata Bhagwati. Different types of herbs are also found in Dunagiri region.
