There are many such caves in India whose secrets have not been revealed even today. Whose secret is revealed, it also remains a matter of surprise for everyone and one of them is Patal Bhuvaneshwar.

Patal Bhuvaneshwar Temple is located in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand State. It is the famous city of Kumaon division of Uttarakhand is situated in Gangolihat, situated in the middle of hilly plains at a distance of 160 km from Almora via Sheraghat.  

This temple is a collection of many underground caves in the midst of dense deodar forests, of which the temple of Lord Shankar is established inside a large cave. It is believed that 33 crore gods have made their abode in this cave.

It is written in the Puranas that: – This cave was first seen by King Ritupurna in Treta Yuga.

In Dwapar Yuga, Pandavas played Chaupad with Lord Shiva was in Patal Bhuvaneshwar. When Jagat Guru Shankaracharya was interviewed from this cave around 722 AD in Kaliyuga, he had established a copper Shivaling here.Narasimha Bhagwan is seen as soon as he goes to the cave of Patal Bhuvaneshwar. On going down a little further, the structure raised like the hood of Sheshnag is seen. It is believed that the earth rests on this only.

Moving inside the cave,the shape of cow’s udder is visible from the roof of the cave, this figure is of Kamdhenu cow. It is said that a stream of milk used to flow from it for the gods, but in this Kaliyuga, now water drips instead of milk , which is really a mysterious thing.

Going inside this cave, a swan with a bent neck is seen sitting on top of a pool. It is believed that Lord Shiva made this pond to drink the water of his serpents. Kund’s care was given in the hands of Garuda, but when Garuda himself tried to drink water from this pool, Shiva turned his neck in anger.

This is the first temple in the world where Ganesha is worshiped in human form.  This cave is 90 feet below and its path is very thin and after walking a little further, you start seeing the shape of the plateau valley. According to the belief, it is said that the severed head of Ganesha has been installed here and he is called Adiganesh.

It is also described in Skanda Purana that Mahadev Shiva himself resides in Patal Bhuvaneshwar, and other gods come here to praise him.

According to other people, it is also said that when King Ritupurna reached this cave after chasing a wild deer, So he had a direct darshan of 33 categories of deities, including Mahadev Shiva, inside this cave. It is said that the one who visits Lord Shiva in Patal Bhuvaneshwar in the month of Sawan gets equal merit by traveling to Char Dham.
