Uttarakhand has kumauni ( Pahadi) Culture. It is surrounded with Himalayas & Ancient Temples. It still involves Traditional ethics, moral values & have simplicity in nature. Uttarakhand is the home of multiple ethnic groups and having its own culture. Culture, Festivals & Dresses makes the Uttarakhand different state with other states.

Uttarakhand is a hilly state, due to which the weather here remains very cold and it is a very beautiful state and it is also known as Devbhoomi

Uttarakhand is divided into two divisions – Kumaon division and the other is Garhwal division.
Due to which the costumes and languages ​​of these two circles are slightly different.

The official language of Uttarakhand is Hindi.
There are many types of people settled in Uttarakhand and many types of folk languages ​​are spoken here.
Here Kumaoni, Garhwali and Jaunsari are the main languages. Kumaoni language is used in Kumaon and Garhwali language is used in Garhwal.

Sanskrit has got the status of second official language of Uttarakhand.

Womens of Uttarakhand wear Ghagri & Angri, and the same mens wear kurta & pajama.
It is customary to wear Pichoda on auspicious occasions in Kumaon.
In the marriage ceremony, the women here wear gloop and charaeu, nostrils in the nose, earrings in the ears and anklets and nettles in the feet.

Major festivals of Uttarakhand:-

In Uttarakhand , festivals are celebrated throughout the year. Apart from some major festivals of India like- Deepawali, Holi, Dussehra etc.,there are some local festivals which are celebrated with great pomp.

The festivals of Uttarakhand are very colorful and distinctive and are a mixture of various social and cultural factors.
Some of the local festivals are as follows:-

  1. Makar Sankranti:- also known as Uttarayan, Maghi, Bhogi, Pongal


2) Ghee- Sankranti:- also known as Olgia festival is celebrated on the first day of Bhado (the month of August) in Uttarakhand


3) Phool Sankranti (Phool Dehli):- Auspicious folk festival which welcomes the spring season in Uttarakhand


4) Vishuvat Sankranti (Bikhot):- Mesh Sankranti is a traditional New Year Festival as per solar calendar


5) Harela and Bhitoli:- Harela means ‘day of green’ and is celebrated in the month of Shravan (the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar) to worship Lord Shiva


6) Chaitra Parva:- Navratri is a Hindu festival Navratri means ‘nine nights’. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of the mother are worshipped


7) Raksha Bandhan:- Celebration of any brother-sister relationship


8) Diwali (Bagwal):- Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs


9) Vat Savitri:- The festival is celebrated in honour of Devi Savitri

10) Basant Panchami :- Honor of the Hindu goddess Saraswati, is a festival that marks the preparation for the arrival of spring
