Gangotri is situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Gangotri is the place of origin of river Ganga. This Dham is at an altitude of 3,042 meters above sea level.

It is believed that Gangotri Dhaam was built in the 18th century. It was established by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa.

It is situated on the left bank of Bhagirathi river. This is an ancient temple situated in the midst of deodar trees. According to Mythology, the Chakravarti King of Raghukul, the ancestor of Shri Ramchandra ji, Bhagirath did a tremendous penance of Lord Shankar sitting here on a boulder.
