Haridwar means “Gate of the Lord”. Hari is one of the names of the main deity Vishnu in Hinduism. Haridwar is a famous pilgrimage site of Haridwar district of Uttarakhand. Bhagirathi came to the plains for the first time after coming out from the hills.

This is the route for the famous pilgrimages of Lord Vishnu and Shiva named Badrinarayan and Kedarnath, which are situated in the northern part of the Ganga. Haridwar city is considered to be the gate of Shri Badrinarayan.

It is known as Ganga Dwar and in the Puranas it is known as Mayapuri. Kumbh Mela is held at the Ghat of Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar.
