Kedarnath temple is famous in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand state. Kedarnath Temple is in the lap of the Himalayas is one of the Char Dham and Panch Kedar along with being included in the twelve Jyotirlingas.

This temple is situated on a six feet high platform. There is no historical evidence about the age of this temple, but Kedarnath has been an important pilgrimage site for a thousand years.

A small history of this Jyotirlinga is that, Maha ascetic Nar and Narayan Rishi used to do penance on Kedar Shring of Himalayas, incarnations of Lord Vishnu pleased with his worship, Lord Shankar appeared and according to his prayer, granted him the boon to reside forever in the form of Jyotirlinga.

The story of Panch Kedar is believed to be that, after winning the Mahabharata Yudh, the Pandavas wanted to get rid of the sin of fraternity. For this he wanted to get blessings from Lord Shiva, but Lord Shiva was angry with the Pandavas. The Pandavas arrived in Kashi for the Darshan of Lord Shiva. Even when they did not meet Lord Shiva, they reached the Himalayas. By then Lord Shankar ji took the form of a bull and he got along with other animals.

The Pandavas became suspicious of this and Bhima took his huge form and spread his legs on two mountains. All the other cows and bulls left, but Shankar ji, who was taking the form of a bull, was not ready to go from under his feet at all.

Bhima was just forcefully pouncing on the bull that he started disappearing on the earth, only then Bhima caught the triangular back of the bull. Seeing the devotion and determination of the Pandavas, Lord Shankar was pleased and after giving immediate Darshan to the Pandavas, freed them from sin.
