Prayag is regarded as the largest pilgrimage centre after the Rigveda era. Every confluence is known as Prayag. The most important reason is that here the most important rivers of India meet – Ganga & Yamuna. It is said that a person who dies in this confluence is released from the cycle of rebirth and achieves salvation.

The meeting place of these rivers is considered an important pilgrimage. Panch Prayag of Uttarakhand is situated at the confluence of the main rivers.

Panch Prayag of Uttarakhand are :- Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnprayag, Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag.

1.RudraPrayag:- It is a town and a Nagar Panchayat located in Rudraprayag district of Garhwal division of Uttarakhand state, India. Rudraprayag is one of the five Prayag of Alaknanda.

  Here, Triyugi Narayan, Rudraprayag a Vishnu temple near this holy place. Rudraprayag district has been formed on 16 September 1997.

2.KarnPrayag:- It is located in Chamoli district of Garhwal division of Uttarakhand state of India. Karnprayag is situated at the confluence of river Alaknanda and Pindar.

Karna Ganga is also a name of Pindar river, whose origin is Pindari Glacier of Himalayas which comes under Bageshwar district of Kumaon region.

3.DevPrayag:- Devprayag is a town in Tehri Garhwal district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. This is one of the Panch Prayag and here the Alaknanda River meets the Bhagirathi River. It is believed that an ascetic named Devsharma had made a severe penance here, after which the name Devparayag came here.

4.NandaPrayag:- Nandprayag is a famous tourist destination as well as one of the famous hill pilgrimages of Hinduism.  Nandprayag is situated at the confluence of Nandakini and Alaknanda River. According to mythology, Nand Maharaj did penance to get Lord Narayan as his son.

5.VishnuPrayag:- Vishnuprayag is located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state of India. It is situated at the confluence of Alaknanda River and Dhauliganga River.  Vishnuprayag has a detailed description in Skanda Purana. After Devprayag in Panchprayag, Vishnuprayag is regarded as of special significance.
